István Gödölle was born in 1940 in Budapest, Hungary. He graduated from the Technical University of Budapest in 1963 with a M.Sc.Elec.Eng. degree. From 1963 to 1969 he was an engineer with the Institute for Measurement Technology, then with the Institute for Occupational Health, both in Budapest. In 1970 he passed his patent attorney examination, and in 1978 he received his Doctor of Law degree from Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest. He started his patent career with a Hungarian business machine company in 1969. He entered private patent and trademark practice in 1971 and was with Patent & Law Office for International Affairs, Budapest.

In 1990 he was one of the four patent attorneys who established the firm Gödölle, Kékes, Mészáros & Szabó Patent and Trademark Attorneys. He was managing partner of the firm until 2023. From 2003 he is a European patent attorney, and from 2004 a professional representative before the European Union Intellectual Property Office.

Dr. Gödölle was a research fellow with Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Patent, Copyright and Competition Law in Munich, Germany, in 1983/1984.  He was a member of the Codification Committee for a patent bill at the Ministry of Justice in 1994. He was a member of the National Intellectual Property Council and a member of the Body of Experts on Industrial Property in Hungary. He is a member of the Hungarian Chamber of Patent Attorneys and was its first President from 1996 to 1999.

Dr. Gödölle has been a member of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) since 1974 and was a member of the Executive Committee, the Programme Committee and the Nominating Committee of AIPPI.  In the Hungarian Group of AIPPI he served as General Secretary, then he was President from 1998 to 2010. He is a member of a number of international associations in the field of intellectual property (FICPI, INTA, MARQUES, UNION-IP, LIDC, ATRIP), furthermore of the Hungarian Trademark Association (MVE) and the Hungarian Association of Competition Law. He was a member of the Presidency and the Committee, respectively, of the Hungarian Association for the Protection of Industrial Property and Copyright (MIE).

Dr. Gödölle is the author or a co-author of more than 80 articles on different topics in intellectual property law. He was a member of the Editorial Board of the European Trade Mark Reports, London, United Kingdom. Since 2005 he has been a contributor of the online publication “Madrid System Guide” of the International Trademark Association (INTA), New York, NY.

He lectured on patent law at the Law Faculty of Eötvös Loránd University from 1980 to 1989. Since 2006 he has been a senior lecturer on the protection of intellectual property with the Faculty of Information Technology and Bionics of Pázmány Péter Catholic University, Budapest.

Dr. Gödölle was awarded the Jedlik Ányos Prize by the President of the Hungarian Patent Office (1999), the Award of Merit of AIPPI (2000), the Industrial Property Medal by MIE (2002), the Somlai Tibor Prize from the Hungarian Chamber of Patent Attorneys (2005) and the Award “For Hungarian Trademark Culture” by MVE (2021). He is a Member Honoris Causa of the Hungarian Group of AIPPI.
